Why I’m Living a Lie

Why I’m Living a Lie

I’m living a lie on purpose…

This year I decided to live my life in 6 month intervals. I know playing the long game is great and you have to look to the future and yadda yadda yadda…

But the future doesn’t exist. It’s both limitless and completely limited in that it isn’t guaranteed.

I want to live as if I’m going to die in six months. And one day that will be true – heck, maybe it’s true now, none of us can know.

We have this illusion of control over our fate. We think, or even more so, we act like we have all the time in the world. We have no control over when we die, and by trying play it safe, minimizing risk, we do nothing but reduce the life we actually live.

So, 6 months…

Why 6 months?

In part, because it’s close enough that you can see the days ticking away. Another aspect to it is a question that the billionaire investor, Peter Thiel, posed…

““How can you achieve your 10 year plan in the next 6 months?”

He went on to say that you can achieve essentially anything and everything you want within 6 months. That is, build your dream business, check things off your bucket list, become who you want to become etc… in a 6 month time frame.

6 months is not a long time.

On my phone I have a timer that started January 1, and counts down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds to June 31.

Every day, a few times a day, I look at that timer ticking away.

As of writing this I have 152 days, 7 hours, 29 minutes left.

If I sleep 8 hours a night, that’s around 52 days of that 152 days spent sleeping.

So, I actually only have about 100 days left.

Has it had an effect?

Yes.

For some it can have a negative effect, I’m sure, but for the ambitious, for those of us who love acquiring knowledge and pushing ourselves, it can only serve as added urgency, both with work, life, and relationships.

I’m really acting like that timer is counting down to my last day.

I’m saying what’s on my mind, letting go of grudges, fuelling my body to be able to perform optimally because it has to be performing optimally every damn second.

I’m back in the boxing gym. Lifting 4-5 days a week. Booking trips. Making big bets on the business. Producing more content. Working harder. Wasting less time. Appreciating more of my time.

Sure, it’s just a play on my brain, but I like it.

It’s this life that I created Man Greens for. Fuel for the driven life, not the one that thinks it’s never going to end, that pushes things to tomorrow, that doesn’t do things because there’s too much risk or it’s too difficult…

So far I’m liking the little mind-game I’m playing with myself…

And I think it’s worth a shot for anyone who needs a little urgency in their life.

It really makes you think about the question Marcus Aurelius suggested we ask ourselves daily…

“Is this really necessary?”

Is it necessary to be dwelling on your past mistakes when you could be making better decisions in the present?

Is it necessary to be taking a day off when that time could be used for growth and progress?

Is it necessary to be mad at people, to not see them with a tinge of love?

Something to think about. Something to try.

Either way, get after it.

Be Legendary,
Chad Howse
